I purchased this numbers-matching 1972 XLH Sportster in 2014 as an all original but very tired motorcycle. The entire machine was torn down and restored to showroom condition and, by 2017, it was back on the road and has seen approximately 3000 trouble-free miles since then.

1972 was the first year for the 1000cc Sportster motor and the last year for front drum brake. The XLH model came equipped with a starter and this particular bike has both kick and electric start.

During the restoration, the motor was disassembled and checked over by a local Sportster mechanic, then reassembled with all new bearings, +.020 pistons, Andrews cams, new valves and guides. The electrical system was rewired and ignition upgraded with Compu-Fire electronic ignition. Frame got a fresh coat of paint and alloy cases and wheels were polished to mirror shine. Transmission was blueprinted and upgraded with an Andrews close-ratio clutch gear.

It drives and shift like a new Sportster did in '72: that is to say it's not a modern motorcycle and isn't for everyone. Shifter is on the right side. Brakes are drums at both ends. No turn signals, heated grips, or infotainment system. But if you're looking for an 70's ironhead Sportster that was never chopped or disco'd out, this is it.
